It almost lulls you — a steady, circular motion that feels familiar, even domestic. But as you stay with it, the work begins to shift. You’re taken on an emotional journey where nostalgia meets aggression, meditation meets restlessness — and somehow, it all holds together.
Much of Sejal’s practice is circular, and this piece embodies that — both physically and metaphorically. The rotation of the mill mirrors the Chakravyuha’s circular formation, opening up a conversation about systems of control and survival. The cyclical patterns of labor are reflected in the mill’s methodical, almost meditative motion, where beauty and danger coexist in collective movement. You feel the tension between protection and threat, repetition and resistance.
As with much of her work, you walk away with a sense of what I can only describe as revolutionary calm — it sounds like an oxymoron, I know, but that’s exactly the point. The piece invites us to understand the world around us in its lightness and darkness alike. Having witnessed this work evolve from a fragment of an idea into a visceral form, I’m reminded that Sejal’s practice is not only about making visible the unseen forces that shape us, but about finding grace within them — a quiet, persistent defiance.
